lifestyle brand photographer capturing adventure van life scene during multi-day CPG food brand photography production in San Diego

When a new CPG food brand comes to you with a vision and the understanding that getting their visual identity right from day one will make or break their launch — that’s the kind of project every commercial lifestyle photographer dreams about.

This is the story of how we built an entire brand visual library from the ground up across a 3-day, multi-location production in San Diego, and why investing in full-scale lifestyle brand photography is the smartest move a CPG company can make before going to market.

Here’s all about building a strong CPG brand and business with a meat stick company!

Why CPG Brands Need More Than Product Photos to Launch Successfully

The CPG space is ruthless. Shelf space — whether physical or digital — is crowded, and consumers make split-second decisions based on how a brand feels before they ever read a nutrition label.

That’s why the most successful food and beverage brands invest in lifestyle photography that tells a story, not just product shots on white seamless.

You are building the brand story. Yes, the product has to be dialed in. But the brand is what sells the story to the right (read: target) customer. And the brand is what they believe in.

It’s the connection that ties them to something — it’s the thing they identify with.

This is critical, if one, you’re a disruptor in the space, or two, your product isn’t *that* much different than others out there. If you’re just competing on price or slightly different ingredients, chances are, folks will gravitate toward the lower priced item.

However, when you build a brand they believe in, you have the potential to have a customer for life.

This particular client understood that from the start. They came from a background in other industries and had a clear vision for the lifestyle they wanted their brand to embody — active, outdoorsy, family-oriented, and rooted in real food. They didn’t want just e-commerce images.

They wanted a complete visual ecosystem that could fuel their website launch, social media channels, Amazon listings, and everything in between.

As a food and lifestyle brand photographer who specializes in full-production shoots for CPG companies, this is exactly the kind of collaborative, high-touch project I build my business around.

Planning a Multi-Location Lifestyle Shoot: The Production Behind the Photos

Great lifestyle brand photography doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of meticulous pre-production planning, a robust shot list, and a team that knows how to execute across changing environments without losing momentum.

For this brand launch, we mapped out three full production days spanning six distinct locations across San Diego.

Day One — Studio E-Commerce and Hero Shots

We started where every CPG brand needs a strong foundation: clean, controlled studio work. This included product silo images for their website, detailed texture and ingredient shots for storytelling, competitive comparison imagery, and hero compositions featuring their branded cutting boards and raw ingredients.

Every shot was designed with their future e-commerce listings and website product pages in mind — the kind of high-end product photography for CPG brands that converts browsers into buyers. But as every good CPG business owner knows, high-end product photography needs to be complemented by commercial lifestyle brand photography.

Days Two and Three — On-Location Lifestyle Photography Across San Diego

This is where the brand truly came to life. We shot across five on-location settings, each chosen to reflect a different facet of their target customer’s lifestyle.

A private residence served as our home base for scenes ranging from a styled dinner party with friends to a home gym workout sequence, a sauna moment, unboxing their subscription shipper in the kitchen, packing kids’ lunchboxes, and loading up a Sprinter van for adventure.

We brought in 12 models — a mix of adults and children — to create authentic, lived-in moments that feel aspirational but attainable.

From there, we moved to Torrey Pines for hiking and cliff-side shots with sweeping ocean views, the Torrey Pines Gliderport for that iconic San Diego backdrop, and finally the beach for golden-hour family scenes, cooler setups, and active lifestyle moments with spikeball and sand play.

Each location required its own wardrobe considerations, prop styling, and lighting adjustments — the kind of production coordination that separates a full-scale lifestyle brand photographer from someone who just shows up with a camera.

Most of the moments were planned out ahead of time (as much as possible), but every now and then, different inspiration struck, we pivoted, and got creative.

This is truly the play when working with kids (I do a lot of commercial photography for baby & kids brands), so sometimes you know when you’ve got to change up a scene to keep the tiny talent happy.

The Power of a Collaborative Production Team

The thing that made this particular shoot run so smoothly? Having the right people in the room.

Their CEO, creative director, and web specialist were on set with us for both the on-location shoot days — which meant we could make decisions on the fly, pivot when something wasn’t working, and nail the brand vision without a single wasted setup.

This is something I always advocate for when working with CPG brands on large-scale productions: bring your key decision-makers to set.

It keeps the production lean, ensures alignment with the brand vision, and eliminates the costly back-and-forth that happens when the people approving final images weren’t there to see them captured.

For brands considering a commercial lifestyle photography investment at this level, that kind of partnership changes everything.

You’re not just hiring someone to click a shutter.

You’re bringing on a creative producer who manages complex logistics across multiple days and locations while keeping every single frame aligned with your brand story.

What a Comprehensive CPG Brand Shot List Actually Looks Like

When I say this production had a robust shot list, I mean it. Across three days, we covered over 30 unique setups. It was a lot of quick changes, shifting props, and lighting.

This included styled tablescapes with charcuterie and artisan food pairings, fitness and active lifestyle scenes in a home gym setting, sauna and recovery moments, adventure and van life imagery, hiking product-in-use shots along coastal trails, beach family lifestyle with kids and parents, subscription box unboxing sequences, kitchen and pantry shelf styling, close-up ingredient and texture photography, and clean e-commerce product silhouettes.

Having the team as prepared as possible, a dialed-in shot list and timeline, and a collaborative team is key.

Each setup had detailed prop lists, model assignments, specific creative direction, and time blocks to keep us on schedule. That level of pre-production planning is what allows a production this size to run smoothly across three days without a single wasted hour.

Why Emerging CPG Brands Should Invest in Professional Lifestyle Photography From Day One

Here’s what I tell every new food, beverage, or wellness brand that’s preparing to launch: your visual content is the foundation everything else gets built on.

Your website, your Amazon listings, your social media, your pitch decks, your retail presentations — they all pull from the same image library.

If that library is thin, inconsistent, or low quality, every single touchpoint suffers.

This brand chose to invest in a premium lifestyle photography production before they ever went to market, and the result was a complete visual toolkit that gave them the confidence and flexibility to launch across every channel simultaneously.

No scrambling for content. No mismatched aesthetics between their website and their Instagram. No settling for iPhone shots because the “real” photos weren’t ready yet.

That’s the ROI of working with a lifestyle product photographer who understands full-scale CPG productions — you walk away from one well-planned shoot with months (sometimes years) of content that positions your brand exactly where it belongs.

What It Takes to Execute a Production Like This

If you’re a CPG brand, marketing team, or founder thinking about investing in this level of lifestyle brand photography, here’s what to consider: You need a photographer who can manage complex, multi-day productions — not just show up and shoot, but handle pre-production planning, location scouting, prop and wardrobe coordination, model casting, and on-set creative direction.

You also need someone who understands the CPG landscape specifically.

Food and lifestyle brand photography has its own set of requirements around how products appear, how ingredients are styled, and how lifestyle moments need to feel both authentic and aspirational.

The difference between an amateur food photo and a brand-building lifestyle image is significant, and it shows up in conversion rates.

And perhaps most importantly, you need a creative partner — someone who’ll sit down with your team, understand your brand story, and translate that into a visual language that scales across every platform you’ll ever need.
